LECTURE ON ELOY ALFARO IN OTTAWA

At the behest of the Embassy of Ecuador in Canada, on March 14, 2012 Professor Alberto Florez-Malagón gave a lecture at Ottawa University, entitled "Remembering Eloy Alfaro: The politics of dependency, or haw Latin American liberals in the 19th Century, articulated to the world system". Present at the lecture were professors and students of Ottawa U, Canadian Government officials, members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Ottawa, fellow Ecuadorians residing in Ottawa and Gatineau, and members of the public.

Ambassador Andrés Terán inaugurated the event with a short introduction to thank the attendants for their interest in learning more about the history of Ecuador and the figure of Eloy Alfaro; he highlighted the academic qualifications of professor Florez-Malagón, and he made a brief description of the contributions of Alfaro’s Liberal Revolution, who major historians consider as one of the referents of Ecuador.

Professor Florez’ lecture revolved around the accomplishments of Latin American liberals during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly by Eloy Alfaro in Ecuador, in their efforts to achieve the modernization of their countries and their inclusion in the international community.  References to historical moments in Latin America and around the world allowed those who attended the lecture to learn more about the true value of the achievements of these figures.

At the end of the lecture, there was a very lively question and answer session, and several participants made interesting remarks related to the significance of the figure of Eloy Alfaro for Ecuadorians, evidenced by the fact that the “Old Fighter” - as Alfaro is known in Ecuador- was selected as the best Ecuadorian citizen ever.
