The Ministry of Environment and Water of Ecuador through the NDC Support Program, with the support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), has been working since 2018 in a participatory process through which the first NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution) of Ecuador was formulated in the key sectors of energy, agriculture, land use and forestry, industrial processes and waste. This instrument was validated by the Interinstitutional Committee on Climate Change (CICC), on March 29th 2020 it was presented to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and in August it became a national public policy through Executive Decree No. 840. Currently, the NDC Support Program is in its second phase, and its objective is to create enabling scenarios for NDC implementation and promote the private sector participation to achieve more ambitious Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction objectives.
In this regard, the NDC Support Program has planned to implement the Third Round of 3D Virtual Climate Businesses in Ecuador which aims to promote national and sub national public (traditional-public and public-private) investment projects and initiatives with climate change mitigation components aligned to the NDC with national and international investors, cooperation, multilaterals, private companies and academia.
Due to the current circumstances, to safeguard health and in compliance with regulations and social distancing, the event will be held through a virtual platform that will simulate a real business conference in three dimensions from the comfort of any computer.
Finally, it is important to consider that in the context of the current world economic recession, where Ecuador has been impacted in a particular way, and in line with a number of multilateral organizations, it is necessary to consider that public investments in climate change initiatives and projects are able to generate a green recovery by creating new job opportunities, while mitigating and reducing future climate change risks.
