This is the first cultural event in the Capital of Canada that brings together several embassies regardless of their region or language, as well as representative cultural institutions of Ottawa, through a selection of documentaries, directed by renowned filmmakers from various countries, about contemporary themes. This is an event co-organized by the Embassies of Ecuador, Germany, Chile, Colombia, Spain, France and Mexico, and the Alliance Française Ottawa, Ottawa Public Library, UNAM Canada and Carleton University.
In this edition of World Documentary Tour the Embassy of Ecuador will be screening on February the 27th, at the Alliance Française – Ottawa, Baltazar Ushka, the Frozen Time (2008) and on March the 6th, at Carleton University, Richcraft Hall – Room RB 2200, Llanganati (2017). Baltazar Ushka, the Frozen Time
Directed by Igor and José Antonio Guayasamín Documentary/Ecuador/22 min/2008. English subtitles. On the Chimborazo volcano, the highest in the world in relation to the center of the earth, more than 5,000 meters high, works Baltazar Ushka. For decades he has been chopping large pieces of ice from the heights of Chimborazo volcano to sell them in the city. In the past this very difficult job was done by Baltazar’s entire community, now he is the only one who does that. This documentary is an exploration of the worldview of the Andean inhabitants of Ecuador and, at the same time, a deep and circular portrait of an unforgettable character. Llanganati
Directed by Jorge Juan Anhalzer and Isabel Dávalos Documentary/ Ecuador /58 min/2017. English subtitles. This is the story of the search for the enormous treasure that was meant to be used as payment for the rescue of the last Inca emperor, Atahualpa. After the unexpected murder of the emperor, in Cajamarca in 1533, the ransom gold was never given to the Spaniards and, according to a legend, was hidden as revenge in an inaccessible area of southern Ecuador, between the Andes and the Amazon, known as the “Llanganati”. This documentary narrates an expedition led by the Ecuadorian adventurer and photographer Jorge Juan Anhalzer to the heart of the Llanganati. The purpose of this expedition is to check whether an old map that supposedly leads to Atahualpa’s treasure is real or not. This is a documentary that offers splendid aerial and panoramic images of Ecuador.
